Huey said that she may not go if she gets a place in the global internship. Eh, so the only person who is kinda confirmed (and yet NOT because he still has his exams) is Gerald. Where the heck are you on MSN???

So, I am thinking of plan B. And plan B is made of two options: go Europe as planned alone or to NZ. New Zealand, because my cousin is there and it’s one of those places other than Europe I want to go backpacking again (but it’s freezing in May/June >_<). My parents probably won't take it well that I go alone. Sigh. It's not like I hadn't gone traveling alone before what but er, not that they know?

In the other front, work has been busy. I was actually quite happy today because I'm going on two excursions tomorrow! Wahahaha! But I feel like I'm falling ill... Get hot flushes now and then. Sigh...

There's going to be a new guy coming in to work tomorrow. Hahah... "addressing the imbalance" indeed.

<s>Feeling a bit sian now. Why is it always always always always this stupid crush that affects my feelings? Sigh.</s> Never mind, not his fault. My own, always my own.

So I started the new year by sending Chris off at the airport. After he left, KY and Andrew went to eat Burger King. I didn’t have much to do so I took the MRT on a lark and went down to Bugis (I had the concession anyway).

There was a crowd that morning as many people went to visit the temple. The Bugis market was as bustling as ever even though it was only 10am. There was crowd gathered outside the OG to wait for the opening. Apparently, there is a 20% discount off storewide. ^^ I went in to have a look but they didn’t have anything I really wanted to get.

I wrote this halfway and got sidetracked looking at airplane prices. Funny how non-European airlines are the ones who are less expensive. Heh…

Something to see:

The coming year is a big one for Tintin. In 2009 it will be 80 years since the boy reporter embarked on his first adventure, a trip to the Soviet Union. In Belgium a museum is to open, dedicated to the work of Hergé, Tintin’s creator, whose real name was Georges Remi. (His initials, when reversed, are pronounced Hergé in French.) Even under construction, the museum is impressive: a soaring structure of concrete and glass, wrapped around a large wooden form like the hull of an upturned ship. The seriousness of the architecture carries a message. This is not a theme park, but a gallery for high art. That is an uncontroversial view in continental Europe, especially in Belgium and France, where cartoon strips are reviewed in critical essays and dissected in academic theses.

The article itself is worth a read too.

I finally have an occasion to use these acronyms! Hahah!

Be careful what you wish for because things just got quite busy in the office. Now that I’m two weeks on in the job, I now have one ongoing project that I do in my spare time (which is probably none until next Thursday).

We (people at my office) had a lunch together at this Belgian restaurant/bar at Robertson Quay because two of the staffers were leaving. The place’s specialty was in mussels and I thought it was quite whimsical since the wall had Tintin and other characters from the same title on it.

I was sitting opposite our big boss, hahah. He reminded me quite a bit of an amalgam of people that I find interesting or admire. I understand he studied architecture and when he asked me my plans at the end of my work at DesignSingapore (I said go to Europe lor), he told me about Europe and the places I should go. Here is what he said:

Berlin: I was saying that I wanted to go to Prague and he said that I should definitely go to Berlin so that I could see the contrast between cities. Another one he said to see was Barcelona.

Turin, Piedmont: This is where the car design center is (you have all your famous automobile makers here, Fiat, etc). He told me about a hotel they stayed in when they were working. Apparently, it used to be an automobile factory (holy crap, it appears on google maps!) and it was converted into a kind of shopping/accomodation area. It still retained the test track on the roof (hahah, they built their test track on the roof!) If it was anything like the one at Epcot, I’d like to see it, lol. What a funny idea, putting it on the roof. But I suppose it saves a lot of space. He also said the track was 1km long. One kilometer!

[It would be pretty cool to visit for the history since this is where the start to Italian unity began. Also, he said that the company did a lot of work in the northern parts of Italy since it was where the design center is. I suppose that the urban-rural divide hadn't ended since the 19th century...]

Milan: The city has a large cathedral made entirely of white marble and was built in the late medieval times. It was cleaned up in recent times so the marble now gleams white instead of brown-black (as it did when he saw it as a student). He said that when they went for a visit, they went all the way up to the roof to have a look and discovered even the roof was made of marble. He recommended it as a must-see. I mean, it’s pretty amazing, it’s a very large cathedral made entirely out of marble! And in medieval times! No computers, machinery, anything!

Copenhagen: Almost 10% of Denmark’s energy comes from wind power and they put their wind turbines in the sea. So, he said, if you fly over to Copenhagen, you must sit at the window seat to see the sea of turbines. He also said that he was amazed to find that it was more than 10 storeys high. Wow! Maybe I should go find a boat that can let us have a look, hahha. Denmark also makes the best wind turbines.

Copenhagen is worth a visit because it is rated the best place to live. Very eco-friendly too.

He also said a bit about how most of Europe was very polluted (in my head, I was thinking, oh, industrial revolution) and that places like the UK did a lot to clean things up, so much so that there is no such thing as the London fog anymore (which they still had when he was living their in the 70s/80s). I shall ask Gerald about it. Hahha!

[Addendum: Now that I've read a bit about what he mentioned, I notice that all these places have some architectural significance (I guessed so with the cathedral but it turns out that one of the things Copenhagen was cited as the best place for living is its "cutting edge design" and the Lingotto factory was considered avant-garde when it first opened). Wah, I can see his passion for design shows through and through =)]
