Sit-On-Tops

Now that I think about it, calling open deck kayaks sit-on-tops sounds vaguely dirty. Hahah… From henceforth they shall be called cowgirl kayaks!

Had a try on one of those at Lower Seletar Reservoir this morning. Can’t say the placid reservoir waters agreed with me (I like waves) but it was an interesting morning out observing other kayaks and dragon boats. It was very peaceful to be out in the middle of the water and watching the school teams practice at a distance.

The kayaks they trained on were super unstable and I could see them wobbling the whole time as they made circuits around the reservoir. High hull + no diamond legs + narrow kayak = unstable but can cut through the water quickly. I know because I was following this girl who was wobbly but speeding ahead of me so I tried to match her paddling speed and was behind anyway. Hahah.

The open deck kayak is super stable and easy to paddle. I think it may be comparable to the Acadia (aka KY’s wallow pool). You can easily sleep on the kayak! No wonder you don’t need a star certification to rent one.

(I was also curious about them because from what I can see, a lot of the kayaking operations overseas use these SOTs. I guess this is their way of catering to beginners too.)

AND OF COURSE CAN GUY WATCH. Hahah… all those hours of training they do… really shows. ;)

It was quite amusing to watch the dragon boat teams train… the paddles are all synchronized… they guys really paddling like mad as they race down the lane against each other. Then listening to them talk shop and amusing myself being in a new environment.

I think if anyone’s interested, we can go try out Bedok Reservoir. I promise the SOTs won’t let you capsize (you’re not supposed to anyway in reservoir waters). Anyone interested?
